JOEL AT HOME AND IN THE STUDIO

“Je peints, donc, je suis.”

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My art combines my avid interest in color, architecture, interiors and horticulture.
There is no ‘”Hidden Meaning” in my art, with no angst, no cryptic meanings nor political messages.
The paintings present my ideal view of how I would like the world to look.
All of the subject matter is based on real places, personal objects, or on nature’s creations

Translation of the nicest review of my work, written by the art critic Aristide Barilli,
for ”Il Resto di Carlino” newspaper (in 1988) in Bologna, Italy:
“Most people spend their lives trying to get back to The Garden of Eden.
Mr. Roman has never left it.”

A transliteration of a couple who recently visited one of my shows: “%_@&%_)(${%_#DRUA”
…but they were just jealous!

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
For the first ten years after graduation from the university, I painted as much as I could between my various interior design jobs. Ancient History: My last major commercial design was the International Corporate headquarters of Otis Elevator in Manhattan, (while working for the L.C.P Design firm there.)
My commercial and residential design work is ongoing but mercifully infrequent!
Since 1964, my partner Sam and I have moved around a bit: 2 years in Burlington, Vermont, 2 more in Bologna, Italy, then 4 years on Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn and 7 years on the Upper West side of Manhattan. Next were 7 years in San Francisco, two more in Roma, Italy, 6 ¾ years in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and, finally, for the last 6 years, back here in San Francisco. We have gypsy blood in our veins!
