Artist's Statement:

Inspired by mysterious dreams and visions, I have sculpted clay and fiber into haunting mixed media sculptures for over thirty years. My realistic clay sculptures embody the dignity and proud tribal traditions of an ancient people. "In my mind's eye I can see a face. As the clay comes to life in my hands I can see the person and their story. My work is about a fleeting glimpse into someone's life, a memory of a life's journey."

My sculptures are like a canvas. I love textures, colors, ancient designs. My “Goddess Warrior” Series sculptures are inspired by the work of William Morris and his representation of distant ancestors. The “Women” all have a strong presence. Their life size faces and busts are decorated with rich colors, their mysterious eyes are piercing. I embellish the discs that hang from their bodies, representing their fertility, Eggs, abundant and plentiful. They are strong, they are everlasting.

My work is created in Paper Clay, kiln fired cone 6 and then layers of patinas and washes are applied to achieve the unusual colors and texture. Natural feathers, turquoise and beads adorn each sculpture.

My art continues to grow. Recently my ”Spirit of Enchantment” horse was selected as a special commemorative piece for the upcoming NM Centennial celebration. It will be available exclusively at the Museum shops and online through NMcreates.org.
